CH'AKTA PEACE NEGOTIATIONS SUCCEED
Thirty-eight years after the start of the bloodiest war in the history of the Terran Colonies, a peace agreement has finally been accepted by the Ch'akta of Gilese 581b. The Ch'akta monarchy recently caved to great unrest from it's people and a new leader was subsiquently appointed. This new monarch was the one who signed the Gilese 581 Peace Accord last night.
The Chairman of the Terran Colonies, Lord Jorig Augustine, announced last night during a public broadcast that the Ch'akta had finally been bought around to the human idea of peaceful coexistance between species, saying that "they [the Ch'akta] no longer pose an imminant threat to our civilisation. They have agreed to our terms of peace, and we will be keeping a close eye on them during the next few years, to ensure the sincerety of their promise."
The Chairman went on to say that "this day is a glorious day for humanity! We have won a victory, not only for our survival, but for galactic peace with our neighboring sentient race across the stars; the Ch'akta. No man or woman need live in fear for the life of their family and friends again! Today, peace has won over violence and aggression!"
The Chairman accredited much of the sway in viewpoint of the Ch'akta to the efforts of Captain Jonathan Seafort of the Orion Class Destroyer, Ulysis. Captain Seafort's involvement in the negotiations that have been punctured by renewed fighting in the remoter areas of space near the smaller colonies has been praised as the actions of a brave and intelligent man in the effort to preserve the survival of his species. As such, the Captain will be receiving the Plutonian Star at the awards ceremony next month for his actions that have saved so many people during this harrowing conflict.
The career of Captain Jonathan Seafort takes him another step up the ladder of authority as the Chairman hinted at his being appointed to the position of minister of the armed forces. This has been viewed by some as an early retirement offer, however it has not been criticised by any considering the captain's extremely valuable contribution to the victory of the Terran Colonies.
Despite this final victory, the cost to humanity has been high. The loss of Europa through a strategic mistake on the part of the minister of the armed forces lead to the death of more than 1.2 million men, women, and children. The Alpha Centuri Proxima colony also suffered heavy losses during the fight, as did many other outlying worlds. The total lost souls from the war reach a staggering 1.8 million. To honour the war dead, the Chairman has proposed to dedicate a colosus statue holding Europa on it's back at the New London space port, which will be converted back to civilian use after emergency Terran Navy occupation that has been in place for the past nineteen years.
A timeline of the war and declassified accounts of front-line soldiers can be viewed on pages 2 and 3.
