I was chatting with Paul last night, and we wondered whether the GDC might be interested/willing to also act as a CON-game review panel. We were just chatting about the process of readying a game for CON play, and wondered whether just talking through the adventure with the Cabal mightn't be a good way of knocking any remaining rough edges off a scenario before it had a full play test.

Thoughts?

Yes. Any kind of game design or writing is fair game, as far as I am concerned.

Also yes from my POV. Although a sprawling eight-member chat will take 8 people out of potential player bases for playtesting and the con itself. Maybe subsets of the whole group?

The basic idea is great, I'm just wondering at the details now.

I don't see why chatting about it will prevent people playing it later.

And I think that anyone writing a con game would be better advised to knock together a playtest and run it.

But if someone wants to talk through ideas first, that's cool.

Mike, it is a point of difference between us, but I like my play-tests to be of the finished game, subject to tweaks, rather than just one step in the writing process.

I think that's a mistake. If you find major problems with what you have, the rework required is more significant. Playtesting as early as possible means that all the feedback you get will be integrated better and without requiring that you throw stuff away.
