|
|
To: Jenni, Fraser, Alasdair, and (I assume) Sean.
All right, so we're gunna take Capes for a test drive. I'll be running Capes Lite, which I recommend you take a read of. It's about 12 pages long.
First, I'll talk a bit about the game, then (at the bottom of this post) we can start arranging when, where, and who.
Capes is a competitive story-telling game about superheros. It has no GM - rather, we're all equally contributing to creating the story right then and there. Jenni, you'll be familiar with this from playing Universalis.
Just like Universalis, in Capes you can play a specific character the whole way through if you want. You can also choose to swap between characters. The system encourages people to play villains, or at least sources of opposition to other players.
Get that? When you play Capes, you'll be competing with and opposing other players and their PCs quite a lot of the time. This makes the story and all the cool bits of the game work. The key is to create conflicts that the other players are interesting in participating in.
I've run Capes before, and it was a fascinating mess. I (and the other players) spent most of the three hours trying to get a handle on how the basics worked. Hopefully, that's sorted now.
Also, because I was concentrating on the mechanics, I didn't allow enough opportunity for roleplaying. That'll be a focus this time. More in-character stuff!
From the Capes FAQ:
Quote: | How many people should be involved in a Capes game?
The general consensus seems to be that 2 is worthless, 3 is good, 4 is perfect, 5 is good, 6 is getting unmanageable, and more than 6 is pretty much not worth trying.
|
Last time I ran Capes, it was with six players total. It was a struggle to make work, partly because of a lack of time in the spotlight for each player. Fraser, you played in that first Capes game, right?
This time we've got five players in total. Me, Jenni, Fraser, Alasdair, and (I assume) Sean. I wanted to play with four people in total, but five is great - we're covered, even if a couple of people have to drop out on the day. But we should all be prepared to be patient with each other as we find our feet.
I've created a Doodle poll here, to schedule a day. Tick the days you're available - we can sort out times next. No registration required. _________________ Cheers,

before I start filling in boxes, can I clarify a time frame? I mean is it evenings for the weekdays or what? _________________ read more of my daring adventures at http://jennitalula.wordpress.com/ |

I figured we'd arrange a specific time once we'd settled on two or three possible dates.
For weekdays, evenings are the general plan unless we all happen to be free / unemployed on the day in question.
For weekends, I'm fine with mornings, afternoons or evenings. I'd prefer afternoons.
The game should take about three hours, maybe less.
How does keeping it that loose sit with you? _________________ Cheers,

I put up the days I am available on Doodle.
Also, I am generally free on Tuesdays and Thursdays during the day, as I do not work those days, but I am usually busy during the evenings of those days, so I didn't put myself down as available unless I was also free during the evening. |

Oh, and I don't think I played in that Capes game. I don't think I've played Capes before, so it musta been someone else. |

OK, Saturday 22 is the winner! (With the 23rd and 29th as backups - the 30th is the Nine Worlds game).
Because I love it so much, I'm starting another Doodle poll to arrange a good time of day. I'm hoping for late morning into early afternoon (which is when my brain's best), but I'm flexible. _________________ Cheers,

All righty, we're on for the 22nd starting around 2 and going till 5. I'll be in touch about venues in a little while.
In the meantime, I again recommend taking a look at Capes Lite (12 pages), which I linked to above. The first 3 pages are clear description of what the game's like. From there it gets into an example of play that will all make sense once we're in the middle of the first scene. Basically, it's like poker - each person takes a turn as 'dealer', and then there's a round of 'raises' ... sort of. _________________ Cheers,

I feel a bit guilty about this, but an Ultimate tournament has turned up on the 22nd, to which I would quite like to go to. I think Mash wouldn't mind going to this as well.
I'm not pulling out, as I have committed to this, but I'm opening up a discussion about whether we could move it to a different day.
What say you all?
P.S. Apparently the 22nd is World Car Free Day as well, in case you're interested. |

Cool, Jenni, Sean and Fraser are all good for the 23rd. We'll await Mash's reply. _________________ Cheers,

Also, if anyone has a set of poker chips (Mash?), can you bring them along? _________________ Cheers,
