The SDC is a competition open to anyone with a NZ postal address to write a 3 hour convention scenario, complete with characters, GM notes, and all the stuff needed to run it.

* You can write up a game you have run at a previous con (including Kapcon)
* You can collaborate with others
* You can discuss your idea here on NZRaG

The judging is an anonymous as possible, given the small community that is NZ roleplaying. But the judge is an upstanding individual who would no doubt judge fairly* even if he guessed who had written any given scenario.

Information about the sdc can be found at http://sdc.rpg.net.nz

So, who is thinking about entering this year?

*This is true even though I haven't won the SDC in, like, 5 years.

I'm thinking a scenario for Nine Worlds would be nice and easy to write up and playtest. I've been doodling some notes on it for the last couple of days, brainstorming some possible situations for it.

After my first Kapcon I thought that SDC probably could do with more than one category. Its an awful lot of work just for one winner and being up against some of the people around I dont think I would have a chance so why bother. (80 pages plus for the winning LARP in 2007 now come on I just dont have the time for that sort of commitment!!??)

To encourage entries maybe there should be additional categories best LARP, Best Tabletop using commercial rules, best Indie, best newcomer etc. Understand that prizes may be a limitation but it would mean there is a comparison of similar types of games, comparing apples with apples if you like.

With only two or three entries each year, separate categories seems a bit excessive and, not to be too delicate, pointless.

Of course, if we got more entries, it might be considered (it's really up to our judge). And we'd certainly give out more prizes for it.

I guess my (poorly put across) point was that if there is only one award (not necessarily prize) this wont encourage many people to enter because of the amount of work needed to be put in vs the chance of winning.

The first time I entered the SDC, I wrote 2 scenarios. One was a light 15 pages (that includes the 6 character sheets, a one page map, and a GM summary page), the other was 21 pages (again 6 pages for characters, one for maps etc).

The 15 page entry won. It was a simple idea, executed well. I'm not saying that it would beat 2007's entry, but it's worth knowing that a short entry (only 9 pages for the actual scenario) can win the competition Smile

Also, Liam, this year there were only three entries (as I recall... maybe there were four?)

Three. Which isn't unusual (though some years we've gone as high as five).

In theory, most of the work is done anyway as a part of organising the scenario for Kapcon. At a current 25% to 33% of winning a decent prize it is already the best odds out there IMO

Well given the likely sci-fi nature of next kapcon I have a few ideas for some games that I want to run and will have a crack at SDC with some or all of them:

Cthulhu classic Vietnam War (kinda Apocalypse Now meets predator type game)
Cthulhu Rising mysterious happenings on a space colony/ship in deep space.
Paranoia xp - something crazy - under development.

Can I enter the Best Friends game that I ran this year? I think I could write it up quite easily, although it's not all my own creation - since the players came up with their own characters....should I get permission from them?

I would say yes you can enter it, and permission would be nice though I imagine most people would be happily simply with a mention in the credits:

* You can write up a game you have run at a previous con (including Kapcon)
* You can collaborate with others

So, I have an idea for a setting, genre and some basic thoughts on what might happen during the game. I think I will attempt to write this up, though my time is fairly limited this year. In the interests of promoting discussion, I'm going to try to develop the idea here on NZRaG (and put up some of the writing too).

I will now start a new thread for my game idea, and invite others to do the same if they are so inclined Smile
