Forum and details at http://game-chef.com/af2008/.

Basic idea: Artists enter first, each making a few illustrations for a game that doesn't yet exist. Designers will pick a set and create a game for it.

Hot!

I'm pretty certain I'll be in for this one.

The game design portion start is now imminent - today US time which will probably mean this evening or tomorrow morning NZ time

Given that my fortnightly game falls not in the week of Game Chef, I wonder if any other prospective designers would like to try and fit in a playtest session sometime during the week?

When I have managed to do this in previous years, it has been immensely helpful.

I'm reserving judgement till I see what the rules are this year.

In the spirit of said reservation, I'll say that (in principle) I believe your suggestion has some merit - and I'm taking it into consideration.

Yeah, it was just in the nature of a tentative suggestion at this stage.

I decided to tap in to the design contest before the rules are announced, FOR GLORY!

It has begun.

Head over to the site and check out the art, including some from our very own Matt Cowens.

The art selection is astoundingly cool. I have picked two to use... but that required some hard choices.

Matt, yours are funny - I look forward to seeing what games they produce.

Sadly it's on at exactly the wrong time for northern hemisphere grad students. None of the art inspired me sufficiently to commit to the time required, so I won't be playing this year either. Maybe next year Smile

I definitely look forward to seeing what some of those collections inspire, though!

Thoughts (to be added to):

The art was great. Inspiring, even.

After narrowing the art down to a shortlist of about 12, I pulled out my list of games I want to write, to see if there was anything there. I did this based on my new theory of only working on stuff I'm certain about.

From that short list of game, Labyrinth the RPG immediately connected with me and the art.

I wrote up the rough draft of the game Friday night.

Saturday through to Tuesday, I suffered through a massive cold, and also typed a crapload of stuff into the computer.

By about ... ah ... Wednesday (?) it was becoming obvious that my game was very procedural - do this, then do this. Not much space for roleplaying in it. Internet peoples including Mike introduced me to the idea of not having every scene be about the Girl facing a Challenge, but instead giving her room to explore and meet people.

Adopted!

Internet peoples also gave me most of the ideas I needed to write this up - which was great, because at this stage I was starting to flag.

Saturday through to today was editing.

And Mike and a couple of others forced me to write examples - which I procrastinated on, and then finished in 20 minutes.

Submitted, and now trying to unwind.

This is a great competition - an excellent sense of community, and an unparalled opportunity to get feedback from people.

Next year, I'll be writing something shorter (6pp maybe) and for a shorter period of time. That'll stop me burning out (which I came close to), and give me more chance to contribute - which I really enjoy.

My experience was pretty similar - exchange the cold for a couple of migraines, pretty much sums it up.

I was much more directed by the art... I basically went through it all, weeding out the pieces that didn't directly inspire a game until I had 6-8, then brainstorming some concepts until I had one. Then it was a process of posting and writing with bouts of just letting things stew in my head.

I too had some absolutely great feedback this year - two of the others in my group were really helpful (and hopefully I was to them too). Plus a few others commented usefully on this and that (including Steve).

So, Steve, you gonna be taking Serpentine forward into playtesting and further development?
