This was posted by James Wallis today to the DW yahoo group:

"In other news, pending the tying-up of a couple of details and the signing of a couple of documents, we should have an announcement regarding Dragon Warriors v2 in the next week or so."

Woo Hoo! And in celebration I am reposting the cover of the new edition by Jon H:

Woo-hoo indeed. And nice use of the old cover-art.

Yeah, I wish I had just posted the cover and said "Guess what RPG this is for". That would have sorted out the men from the boys Very Happy

The cover art really captures the feeling of "high adventure on the edge of a gloomy forest" feel that the original series had.

More information:

Quote:
Pre-Christmas release. Five releases.

1. Core rulebook, about 250 pages, regular size. Games shops hate stuff that's not 8.5" x 11", and fans like books the same size as all their other books. So all the retail editions will be softcover and 8.5" x 11".

2. Bestiary.

3.Campaign: Old Gods and New Lords. This is the campaign that ran through the original books 1, 2 and 4, with new work to make it all more coherent.

4. Campaign: The Elven Crystals, in a re-edit with a new ending by Adrian Bott.

5. Campaign: The Prince of Darkness (re-edit). This is the campaign in the original book 5.

New covers, interior art and maps throughout. I want to have Jon Hodgson covers for everything, because he's awesome and Gets The Game. He's already done a fantastic one for the Elven Crystals.

We are also looking at new material, but I'm giving no hints or clues there.

If I can make the numbers add up, there will also be a limited-edition volume containing all the material from the core book, the bestiary, OG&NL and PoD (not Elven Crystals because it really is a standalone). Leatherbound hardback signed by Dave Morris and Oliver Johnson. Inches thick, scary price. Am talking to printers and binders right now. This may well be smaller than the retail edition: possibly 7" x 10". This will only be available direct from Magnum Opus Press, and may come out in advance of the mass-market release.

Not quite if his post on a recent DW thread is any indication:

Quote:
Clearly my reputation at Hogshead has not preceded me. I am not James "does not suffer fools gladly" Wallis; nor am I James "does not suffer fools at all" Wallis. I am James "suffer, fools" Wallis. Pleased to meet you. Don't be a dick, and we'll get on fine. There are too many idiots and not enough money in this industry for me to be nice to everyone. If you like the games I publish, buy them. If you don't, or you don't like my attitude, then don't.

Awesome Very Happy

Dragon Warriors is almost as instrumental to me as D&D as my first RPG. It came out in 1985 and was available alongside normal children's novels.

Aside from that, though it is a lot like D&D in shape and feel, its real stand out feature is that it has that early UK fantasy game feel, along with WFRP, Lone Wolf and Fighting Fantasy. I often consider DW to do Basic D&D much better than Basic D&D did. However, that is a little simplistic. The game was well written for youngsters (the cartoon combat example is a classic), with loads of atmosphere and jammed pack with high quality adventures. Though nothing innovative the scenarios were filled with history, intrigue and charm that many early D&D modules don't except in an eccentric way.

The world was also really excellent, being sort semi-historical high adventure on the edge of a gloomy forest full of dark age folklore and myth.

One more related issue, the Blood Sword series was written by the same authors in the same world. They are, along with Lone Wolf and Sorcery, the best of the "Fighting Fantasy" style books ever published.

True but all 5 are available for download from the site above.

Edit: I have removed the link as on further investigation, I believe that the site is not actually fully legit though at least it is open about this:

Quote:
Home of the Underdogs, while not an abandonware site per se (since our aim is to pay tribute to all underdogs, both new and old), supports the abandonware idea. We believe that providing games that have been abandoned by their publishers, while technically illegal, is a valuable service to the gaming community because these games are in danger of disappearing into obscurity, and their copyright holders no longer derive any revenues from them.

In light of the upcoming RPG, this is clearly not the case.

But do you have Chronicles of the Magi and the Golden Dragon books? And you call yourself a hardcore DW fan Smile
