|Creating your Character – 14 steps to glory!
Please use the following guidelines to create a character for use in the campaign.
Step 1: Download the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook pdf (PFRPG)
It is US$9.99. You must create a free Paizo user account to do so.
Much of this mechanical material is also available for free at http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/
If you're currently familiar with D&D 3.5, you can download a free conversion guide from http://paizo.com/store/downloads/pathfinder/pathfinderRPG/v5748btpy89m6 if you are considering playing your favourite iconic race/class.
http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=136890 has an in-depth list of changes between D&D 3.5 and Pathfinder.
Step 2: Download Pathfinder: Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide (4.7 MB)
Read this FREE 16-page Player's Guide and decide what character you want to play.
The guide presents details on how best to customise your character so that he'll fit into the campaign. What’s the best choice of favoured enemy for a ranger? Which of the region's deities will your cleric worship? What about new weapons for your fighter? NOTE: Feats mentioned in this Player's Guide are renamed "Campaign Traits" and you must select one campaign trait (see below).
There's more to building a character than crunching the numbers; this guide also gives you extensive details on the frontier region known as Varisia and the town of Sandpoint where the campaign begins. Build your character from the ground up as a living, breathing addition to this brand new world!
Step 3: Buy Ability Scores
p. 16 PFRPG: Epic Fantasy: 25 points to spend on your abilities.
Each ability score begins at 10. No score can be reduced below 7 or raised above 18 using this method.
After all the points are spent, apply any racial modifiers the character might have (see Step 4).
Step 4: Select a Race
Select from the standard Pathfinder races: Dwarf, Halfling, Elf, Human, Gnome, Half-Orc, and Half-Elf. If you choose Human, you must select a human sub-race from http://pathfinder.wikia.com/wiki/Human. Most humans in the campaign region will be Chelaxian or Varisian, but feel free to select any of them.
Step 5: Select a Class
Select from the standard Pathfinder classes.
Hit Points: Standard, maximum hit points for 1st level plus your Constitution modifier and any other bonuses
Step 6: Select Skills
As per p. 86 ff PFRPG.
Step 7: Select Feats
As per p. 112 ff PFRPG.
Step 8: Select Character Traits
Download the Pathfinder Character Traits Web Enhancement (0.4 MB)
You must choose two traits for your character.
Your first trait can be chosen from the "Feats of Varisia" p. 13 ff from the Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide. Paizo revised character traits after this Adventure Path was published, so "Feats of Varisia" is hereby renamed "Campaign Traits". This trait ties your character into the campaign’s storyline and gives you a built-in reason to begin the first adventure.
Your second trait can be chosen from the Pathfinder Character Traits Web Enhancement above.
Step 9: Select Alignment
As per p. 166-168 PFRPG. The GM doesn't want any evil-aligned PCs.
Whether you choose a good or neutral character, your background should include reasons for you to be in Sandpoint/Varisia, and reasons for you to desire the status quo or actively protect the town/region.
Step 10: Background
Using your character traits as a guide, write a very brief background for your character. Be sure to mention where you’re from, what your life’s been like so far, and mention any major accomplishments or tragedies.
Step 11: Select Equipment
As per p. 140 ff PFRPG. You start with the maximum wealth according to your character class.
Step 12: Fill in the Details
Please determine all of your character’s details, including starting hit points, Armor Class, saving throws, initiative modifier, and attack values. All of these numbers are determined by the decisions made in previous steps. You also need to decide on your character’s name and physical appearance. Please select a character name appropriate to your race and culture (see p. 4 Rise of the Runelords Player's Guide).
You start with maximum hit points.
You start with 1 Action Point (AP), and can earn more by roleplaying effectively using your roleplaying cues.
Step 13: Roleplaying cues
Please define 3 fides, 2 naturae, and at least one meta for your character.
List them so they can be expressed in one sentence:
[Character] believes that [his/her fides]
[Character] [is] instinctively [his/her naturae]
[Character] wants to [metae]
Fides represent your character's motivating beliefs, resulting from reflection and conscious decision.
Naturae represent your character’s instincts, reactions more or less automatic.
Metae represent your character’s goals.

Step 14: Email it to the DM
Please email me a copy of your finished character sheet. The DM may award a magic item appropriate to the character's background as a family heirloom, mentor's good bye gift, grand larceny reward or divine intervention (1st level only).
