How about making round 2 3 hours? The reason for suggesting this is that I was agonising over how long to estimate for "Polaris" -- 2 hours seems a bit tight what with character creation, but I'm not sure even I could take 4 hours of emo chivalric pixiedom.

When the 2/4 hour split was first considered, the idea was that any 3 hour game would be put in a 4 hour slot and everyone would get +1 hour for lunch/dinner.

I'm intending to have each round set up fully before we start so there is less fluffing around between the end of 1 and the beginning of 1a (for example)

Do you have a specific plan for that yet, or is this more of an objective?

I've been pondering how I'd do it, and I haven't got anything terribly smart.

Give the 1a GMs a megaphone with which to scare off the 1 GMs.

This may be too complicated -- I have mixed feelings myself -- but I thought I'd throw it out there for feedback:

Having one round pegged at 3 hours, while keeping the 2x2hr/1x4hr options for the other rounds, might provide a home for mid-length games while short and long games would still have plenty of available slots.

Not sure if it's worth the extra fiddliness or would do more harm than good, but just throwing it into the ring.

Nope not too complicated... it has it's merits. I'll ruminate on it a bit...

Well essentially once all the GMs have their list of games, I'll draft up a potential schedule which will say when which GMs are down for running a game, if their game is chosen. Then on the day we'll do the game decision thing with each GM offering one or two games per round (across 6 or so GMS that's still a heap of games on offer). The games are chosen for the rounds (kind of in stream like KapCon) and then everyone goes off, happy in the knowledge that they will be entertained for the next 4 hours...

Essentially I'm expecting similar numbers to last year, which was about 30 including GMs. So if there are on average 5 people per game (4 "players" and 1 "GM") then there would be 6 GMs per round (being both round 1 and 1a for example).

Well that's the idea. Once I've got the pool of GMs sorted I'll be able to start playing. Expect shared spreadsheets and a Google Wave in the weeks to come.

It would look like this:
Round 1 9 am - 1pm or 9 am - 11 am
Round 1a 11.05am - 1pm

Break

Round 2 2pm - 5pm

Break

Round 3 6pm - 10pm or 6pm - 8pm
Round 3a 8.05pm - 10pm

I've made the 2 hour rounds 5 minutes shorter at the start as in theory it will just be players walking from one round to another.

I'd like it so that most GMs only ran one 4 hour slot (whether that's one game or two) or (if we go with the shorter middle round suggestion) one 3 hour round.

10pm is much saner end time than 11pm.

Yeah, it is. Also it allows for anyone who might want to run a free form LARP to do so (I'm looking at you Idiot and Donna).

How does another run of Against the Night (9 players, 1 hour) sound?

Sure if people are into it. It's only one hour? Cool, in which case it could fit into round 3a.

Probably not. I am unsure at this stage if I will even be making it to Confusion or Fright Night either. I would love to though. Mouse Guard, Agon and Zombie Cinema (the ones I would likely bring along) are games I would like to get more time with.

That's a shame. Well if things change let me know.

Just a note to all GMs. If you don't think I have your email address could you please PM me with it. It'll make things a bit easier to co-ordinate. Thanks
