Rewarding Roleplaying uses three criteria to encourage and reward better roleplaying. The responsibility for establishing these criteria belongs to the players. You set your own roleplaying goals.

You can earn one Action Point for:

1. Roleplaying with reference to his fides, earning one Action Point per fides per game session.
2. Roleplaying according to his naturae, earning one Action Point per natura per scene, if character acts the way his naturae says he acts
3. Attempting to accomplish his meta, earning one Action Point per adventure (suceed or fail).

Please define 3 fides, 2 naturae, and at least one meta for your character, listing them below so everyone can help each other with this new system.

List them so they can be expressed in one sentence:

[Character] believes that [his/her fides]
[Character] [is] instinctively [his/her naturae]
[Character] wants to [metae]

After the first sentence you can expand a bit. Less is more.

You can email me confidential beliefs, instincts or goals you want your character to have. No more than one of any type, if any, please.

Gaining Action Points upon a level-up is discontinued, as is the Action Point cap. The sooner you define explicitly your character's beliefs, instincts and goals, the sooner you can be rewarded for roleplaying according to them.

Fides [fee-days]

Fides represent your character's motivating beliefs, resulting from reflection and conscious decision.

Requirements: Your character is played with reference to her fides. Fides do NOT strictly dictate the way a character acts. People act contrary to their beliefs all the time.

Development: Fides may change due to the character’s experiences during the game.

Naturae [nat-oor-eye]

Naturae represent your character’s instincts, reactions more or less automatic.

Requirements: Your character is played according to his naturae. Naturae do NOT strictly dictate the way a character acts. People act contrary to their instincts all the time.

Development: Naturae may evolve due to the character’s experiences during the game.

Metae [may-tie]

Metae represent your character’s goals.

Requirements: Your character attempts to accomplish his meta.

Development: Metae may change each adventure, especially if the character achieved her meta when she had the chance.

It may help you to decide the following for your PC before figuring out fides, naturae and metae. I'll use a previous PC of mine, Anlan Evant.

Hates: Orcish behaviour
Loves: Food. Always has a snack available. No snack, he gets hungry. Favourite is spiced meat, particularly salami sticks
Dislikes: Brothers making fun of him
Fears: Reverting to brutish orcish behaviour
Anecdote: ?
Quirk: He lords it over his younger brothers, as he is the oldest. While once always depreciating and humble to humans, since he has reincarnated as a human, he no longer feels inadequate
Goal: To become known for his arcane mastery, not his orc background
To make his old Wizard School proud of him (favoured alumnus)
To show his devotion to Pelor every day by doing at least one good deed
Mystery: ?
Tactics: He will try to avoid physical combat, although he will not retreat from battle if his brothers or friends are still in danger. Will exhaust his spells before sniping from range.

Translating the above into items I can reward the roleplaying of:

Anlan believes that polite behaviour is the basis for civilised society
Anlan believes that personal insults or jokes are the height of rudeness
Anlan believes he should show his devotion to Pelor (3.5 equivalent of Sarenrae) every day by doing at least one good deed

Anlan instinctively enjoys any opportunity to eat, and always has a snack available. Favourite is spiced meat, particularly salami sticks
Anlan instinctively protects his brothers or friends, and will not leave his brothers or friends in danger

Anlan wants to become famous for his arcane mastery, not his orc background
Anlan wants to make his old Wizard School proud of him (favoured alumnus)
