Just got to thinking today... I miss playing Warmaster.

Anybody here in Wellington still play it and maybe want to play again? It's been many years but before GW canned it I bought a few thousand points of figures. Now I need an excuse to paint them all.

Or as a related game, Battle of the Five Armies. I've never seen that up close, but apparently you can mail order it for $160-odd NZD.

Dude, I totally love Warmaster. Although I'm also digging Dystopian Wars at the moment.
Check my warmaster blog and drop me a PM with your e-mail address and we'll organise some games...

Nice. I've never heard of that before. Looks like a steampunk BFG (which I've never played). Is that available locally?

That was/is perhaps the best designed GW game. And so portable!

Absolutely. I still can't fathom how they didn't turn it into their 3rd core game.

The talk back then was that it wasn't creating new players, it was simply converting WFB players into warmaster players, and given the rules were static and the army lists effectively free, this pattern wasn't good for the GW bottom line - thus it lived a strange half life for many years, having new armies released but never receiving decent GW promotion. Now that Priestly has cut his ties to GW you may yet hear the inside scoop...

Warmaster remains an awesome, balanced and highly tactical game IMHO, and the addition of Warmaster Ancients and Warmaster Medieval shows the strength and popularity of the game which is now almost entirely fuelled by a community rather than a company.

Also, Dystopian Wars is a pretty good game with some neat mechanics and awesome miniatures. I've been running demo games (rules, miniatures and terrain supplied) if anybody's interested in some steampunk naval mayhem.

Well, that's an interesting point. I wonder what would have happened to it had they monetised it like their other games.

I didn't know that about Priestly.

I'll give it a go, but never played anything like BFG or Man-o-war.

I love Warmaster, probably ties with Blood Bowl as GW's best game.
