I was really looking forward to watching HBO's interpretation of "A Game of Thrones" - but have just discovered that no NZ broadcaster has picked it up. Argh! In response to an email from me, Sky/Prime said that they might reconsider their position - so if you are keen on watching it on the telly then it might be worth sending them an email expressing your interest too.

That *was* interesting.

I always thought that this legislation would be unworkable, and I guess that our public servants agree.

I've watched the first two, and I felt that they lacked something compared to the books.

I had trouble getting into the books the first time I read them, but second time around found them much better. However, Martin has a *lot* of point of view characters and spends a lot of time explaining things.

Both those make the tv version seem a little sketchy. Visually and actorly, they got it just right. But the story needs a lot dropped out to get onto the screen.

I've decided that I'm going to wait until I can get the whole series on dvd and watch them in one hit - I feel like that's going to be much more satisfying.

Cheers for that - I might just stack them up and watch up all at once also.

Yep, it seems like a very slow build style - like The Wire or Treme. Perhaps too slow to watch one week at a time.

Loved the Wire, Treme did not grab me...

I'm digging it.

There is a lot of exposition done via dialogue which does make it a little slower to build but it's being handled pretty well IMO.

I can see that stacking them up and watching 3 episodes on a trot would work well but I just can't wait that long.

Some people say that American TV is crap, but it's really the primetime stuff that often sucks. Later or more obscure US shows like The Wire, Deadwood, Madmen, Heroes, True Blood, Firefly, Boardwalk Empire, and The Walking Dead show real quality, and are well worth watching on DVD.

Is this show decent quality like some of those, or is it just of interest to fantasy fans? Judging by the first couple of episodes, how does it compare to more mainstream TV shows like Xena or Legend of the Seeker?

It is closer to Rome, the Wire and Deadwood than Xena or Legend of the Seeker.
