I'm fleshing out some LARP characters at the moment and I'm curious. Do you prefer goals to be spelled out or have it all open ended?

Discuss! Fill in the poll! Educate me!

I think the problem is with the word "goal". It implies an end point rather than a starting point, and some people may feel they are pre-defined victory conditions.

If you could have some other word (maybe "kickers"?) then you'd probably avoid most of the problems people have with pre-determined goals.

Kickers* are the single most important tool for player engagement.

* Obviously these work best when player authored, but something GM authored that fills that niche will work at a pinch.

I like to have something to work towards, but I prefer if I can take or leave them. So...open ended I guess is what I'm trying to say.

Also, I can't see the poll Sad

Im with Jenni. I like to have something to aim before, but if it doesn't happen its not the end of the game. So open ended I think.

Also I can't see the poll Sad

Thanks guys, interesting to see what people think.

It looks like the buggy boards ate the poll. But if you want to fill it in I cross posted to Diatribe, http://www.diatribe.co.nz/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5843

I like to know what my character's motivations are... I don't mind having explicit goals, but they can make me a bit too driven (witness the too early vampire-slaying in the Silver Kiss LARP). I do like to succeed
Embarassed

Also, I can find them frustrating when they depend on me interacting with other characters that I am not closely aligned with and those characters have their own goals that pulling them in different directions from me.
