Hi Everyone,
I have turned on compulsory registration for posting, and visual confirmation for registration.
This means spammers should have a harder time of things - it should be more difficult for them to spam the boards.
Of course if they're determined, they'll always be able to spam by creating an account, but I'm guessing it's a case of diminishing returns for them.
I'm thinking about setting up visual confirmation for posting, but we'll see about that if/when it becomes needed. |

But sometimes I can't log in (and this is the first time for a couple of days that I've been able to do so), and that would mean that even when I wanted to comment on something, I wouldn't be able to.
...is there some way that I can log on whenever I want to? (and don't say tick the box with automatic log in when I go to log on, because I have and it doesn't always work). |

The newest registered user is 12MArg3o78237
Looks like a spammer has signed up already. Presumably users can be banned? |

The last 3 sign ups look like spammers... I'll just watch them and see... maybe we have some new russian rpg fans...
And as for banning... we do indeed have that capability.

So how can I log in permanently? This is the first time since my last post that I've been able to log in, and I've no idea how to fix it. |

Okay guys over the next few days you may notice that the members on this site will drop by quite a bit, as Squee and myself are going to check for spam accounts and void accounts

I have deleted the accounts of three recent members. If you recently signed up an account and you are a legitimate user (which I doubt, but the possibility remains), then I apologise. Sign up again, by all means.
We are no longer accepting new members with email addresses at mail.ru or hotmail-so2.com at the very least. If this is not sufficient discouragement, and it may well not be, I will isolate spam accounts by IP address on an ISP or country-wide basis.
If you are a spammer reading this, there is no point continuing here - there are other sites much more highly page-ranked that make better targets, and this site from this point forward is being aggressively monitored. We will not notify ISPs or IP providers of these bans, but you will not be allowed to use these boards for page-rank floating or spamming. |

PS: I'm working on testing the login system to try and isolate the problems some users have been having. I am aware of the problem, but have not yet found why this is happening for some people.
I will post a flash-based guide on how to diagnose cookie problems for both IE and Firefox soon, which may sort out some users' problems.
As always, we appreciate your understanding, and wish to continue to provide the best site and forum experiences we can. I don't get the chance to read all the boards all the time, but I certainly will find time to give to the technical aspects behind the board.
Squee out! |

Users kolik, johndoe1958, kimwong, loponosik and Trisha all look like spammers to me. Or at least the webpage links in their profiles are quite suspicious. |

Thanks for that... They have all had their accounts deleted
Also, "inbox.com" has been added to the banlist. |

Unfortunately spambots are now able to bypass phpBB's visual confirmation, so chances are you're going to see a lot more of them.
We had the same problem on www.mordavia.com/forum and www.diatribe.co.nz . We re-coded the sites slightly to force users to enter the confirmation code characters in the reverse order to how they appear. No more spambots have registered. If you're interested in the code I can send you snippets, it's just a couple of lines. |
